Our History
The Sri Kamakhya Mahavidya Mandir, a small Shakta Tantric temple dedicated to Sri Sri Maa Kamakhya and the Dasa Mahavidyas (Ten Tantric Wisdom Goddesses), was founded formally in June 2008 by devotees of Kamakhya and the Mahavidyas, and has been holding daily devi aradhana and puja since that time, including regular community worship for adults and youth alike.
The temple is currently located in the home of Kulasundari Devi and her husband. Our shrine features a main altar to Kamakhya, with shrines for Kali, Tara, Maha Tripura Sundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi/Saraswati, Kamala/Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Shiva.
Srimati Kulasundari Devi is the Acharya of the Sri Kamakhya Mahavidya Mandir, and as an initiated sadhika of the Kamakhya Tantrika Kula, offers daily worship, performs ceremonies and rites of passage, and provides simple religious instruction to devotees with the blessing and guidance of her gurus.
Being firmly rooted in the Shakta Tantra traditions of Kamakhya, our temple honors all forms and manifestations of the Divine Mother in India and around the world, and welcomes ALL regardless of gender, caste, religion, ethnicity, orientation, etc. This has been a hallmark of the temple since its founding.
On Buddha Purnima in May 2009, the Sri Kamakhya Mahavidya Mandir was registered as a California non-profit religious corporation, and operates as a church/temple in the state of California.
With the aid and guidance of our temple’s Tantrikacharyas on our Spiritual Advisory Board, the mandir received official blessings from elders of the Sri Sri Kamakhya Temple in Assam, including:
Sri Kamala Ranjan Bhattacharyya
Sri Keshab Sarma
Sri Dharmeswar Sarma
Sri Kamakhya Prasad Sarma
Sri Nabakanta Sarma
